Garden Tools and Accessories
I am looking to buy a decent watering can.
Steel watering cans are the best to buy – they last longer than plastic cans. We have outdoor watering cans available in three sizes: 4.5L, 5L and 9L in high quality brands like Haws, Burgon & Ball and Ryset. We also have lots of indoor watering can options in 0.7L, 1L and 1.7L sizes, as well as bundles with a mister included. Haws watering cans are very popular and are available in 4.5L and 9L, in a variety of designs and colours.
I am looking for tools for very small elderly hands, particularly secateurs and hand forks/trowels.
The Burgon & Ball Pocket Pruner is ideal for small hands along with the Burgon & Ball Hand Trowel and Hand Fork. We also recommend the Sophie Conran Range, specifically designed for smaller hands.
What happens if I buy the wrong size of gloves?
That’s ok, give us a call on 1300206459 or email us at info@qualitygardensupplies.com.au to let us know. As per our returns policy, you can return them within 30 days of receiving it to us at your own cost, unused and in the original packaging. Once we receive them, we’ll send out the correct pair to you in the mail.
What is the best type of rake to use for removing weeds from gravel?
A Ground Rake is the best as you can flip the rake to pull up weeds. The Wolf-Garten Scuffle Hoe Attachment or the Burgon & Ball Weed Slice are also good for weeding on a gravel surface, as the blade runs just below the surface of the gravel.
What tool can I use for removing weeds between cracks?
The block paving knife is specifically designed to get into the cracks between bricks, pavers and around driveways and get out weeds – we also have a long handled version. You could also use a paving brush like the mid handled Burgon & Ball Miracle Block and Paving Brush or the Wolf Garten Joint Brush.
What is the best tool to use to cut dead stems and flowers?
For dead or brittle plants, anvil secateurs like the Wolf-Garten RS4000 Anvil Secateurs are best. For deadheading live flowers, we recommend the specially designed Burgon & Ball Ergo Deadheader.
For more secateur recommendations, check out our Guide to Buying Secateurs.
Hi. Are your window cleaning tools able to reach second floor windows?
Yes, with a suitable handle the Wolf Garten Window Wiper and Window Squeegee can reach second floor windows. Browse our range of handles here.
I was wondering which Wolf-Garten attachment would be better for weeds with deep roots. The Wolf-Garten weed extractor or the thistle one?
They would both do work well for deep roots. If you have harder ground, then the Weed Extractor KS-M Attachment is good as it has foot treads that you can push into the soil with your foot. If the soil is soft then the Thistle Weeder IW-M Attachment is good.
I am looking for quality secateurs, I am an old lady with weaker hands and I need something substantial for heavier work.
For maximum power with minimum effort, use the Burgon & Ball Anvil Ratchet Pruners, the ratchet mechanism takes the effort out of cutting through tough material.
If you have a big pruning job, you could upgrade to the Mini Bypass Loppers with lightweight and compact aluminium handles to reduce fatigue and keep you gardening for longer.
For more secateur recommendations, check out our Guide to Buying Secateurs.
Fertilisers
Take a look at our blog posts on fertilising for more information.
I am trying to grow some tomatoes. My plant is now about 1m high but I'm still not getting any fruit. What am I doing wrong?
There could be a few things going on here. Tomatoes need plenty of sunlight and water to have abundant good sized fruit. It could also be the fertilizer being used. Fertilizer’s high in nitrogen will enhance foliage growth, where as fertilisers with higher phosphorus content will encourage flower and fruit development. Something like Manutec’s Tomato Food soluble fertiliser should do the trick.
How can I help my fruit and flower trees produce more?
Often fruits and flowers need more potassium in the soil to aid with flower and fruit development. Potash is the best all-rounder solution to adding potassium to your plants diet, which can be dissolved in water and added to the soil.
For more tips and tricks, check out our How to Choose the Best Fertiliser blog post.
My lawn has brown patches in it, what fertiliser do you recommend?
For lawn care, we recommend either a long acting granular fertiliser or a short acting hose on fertiliser. Make sure to double-check the type of lawn you have before choosing the fertiliser, as some lawns like buffalo require specific care.
I have hydrangeas and want to change the soil pH for pink/blue blooms. What should I use?
First, we recommend checking your soil pH with a kit as different pH levels yield different hydrangea colours. Then, adjust accordingly with Manutec Hydrangea Pinking or Manutec Hydrangea Blueing.
Plant Protection & Pest Control
Take a look at our blog posts on pest control for more information.
The leaves on my citrus tree are curled and a tad yellow, I was told to use trace elements?
Yes, a trace element deficiency can result in restricted growth, deformed fruit and yellow leaves. We have Manutec Trace Elements which is dissolvable in water to resolve this issue.
I would like to know if OCP Eco-Neem is effective against stink bugs?
Eco-Neem or Eco-Oil works quite well early in the stink bug life cycle more so in spring. Their shells are too hard as adults for it to be effective. You can also hose them off and put them into methylated spirits or vacuum them off. It’s a good idea to change the vacuum bag after as they will stink!
I’m looking for slug pellets that are pet-friendly.
Try the Eradicate Snail & Slug Bait or Eco Snail & Slug Bait which is non-toxic for pets, native fauna and other animals. Alternatively you can try the Ryset Slug and Snail Trap or the Ryset Copper Tape for pot plants.
You can read our How to Remove Snails and Slugs guide for more non-toxic options.
I'm having trouble with fruit flies, what are your recommendations?
For QLD fruit flies we recommend the OCP Eco-Lure Fruit Fly Trap which has replacement wicks. For more common fruit flies, the Yates Pyrethrum Insect Pest Gun is a great general use spray, and the OCP Eco-Insect Killer Concentrate uses a natural soap-based formula with no withholding period.
I don't want to use insecticides in my garden, what should I use instead?
We have a few non-insecticide options for pest control:
Or, check out Gardening Australias’ advice for pest control.
