Yates is an established name in Australian and New Zealand’s gardening rhetoric, and have been for the past 140 years. Their range of fertilisers, plant and pest protection and water-saving solutions has been developed from their love of gardens, big and small. This guide will tell you all about the Yates legacy and how their products compare to Neutrog and Scotts Osmocote.
Who are Yates?
Yates was founded by Arthur Yates in Auckland back in 1883, an Englishman who, ironically, migrated to New Zealand to escape the damp weather of his native Manchester. Arthur opened his seed business in Auckland that would go on to become a renowned name in gardening.
Following a visit to Sydney in 1886, Arthur saw an opportunity to establish a similar enterprise. In 1887, his brother, Ernest, was left to manage the New Zealand seed business and Arthur opened a branch in Hay St, Sydney. In 1906 the two brothers came to an amicable agreement to separate the two companies. This continued until the late 1980s when the two companies joined together again.
By 1893 Arthur had launched his seed packets for home gardeners with ‘Yates Reliable Seeds’ became the company’s catchphrase. It was only a matter of time before the company grew to selling a wider range of products, including fertilisers, sprays, pots, potting mix and tools as well as seeds. With this, Arthur wrote the first Yates Garden Guide, a publication that answered gardeners’ questions that is still published more than 137 years later.

The Yates Acticote range is similar to the Scott’s Osmocote Controlled Release and the Neutrog Pellet based fertiliser range. It has been designed to give your plants an instant release of nutrients and then to continue feeding for up to 12 months. The Yates Acticote is a great set and forget fertiliser and available for:

The Yates Thrive Liquid range is a fast acting liquid fertiliser that starts feeding your plants straight away. You do have to apply this fertiliser more frequently, sometimes as much as every week in the key growing season. - Diverting wooden pallet waste which would have gone to landfill, into kitchen cabinetry
- Converting the backing paper from labels which would have gone to landfill, into commercial building insulation material
Reduce their carbon footprint by reducing emissions through:
- Looking to install solar panels at their operating sites
- Investigating replacing their current fleet with hybrid vehicles
- Working with key suppliers to better understand their emissions
